The Awa Jurobe Yashiki is the former residence of Jurobe Bando, and is related to the play “Keisei Awa no Naruto”. This play is performed daily at the Awa Jurobe Yashiki, and this type of puppet performance, known in Japanese as “Awa Ningyo Joruri”, is a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. A narrator known as a “tayu” recites the story, adding emotion to each part, and a gidayu shamisen (three-stringed Japanese instrument) supports the tayu with a diverse array of tones that can’t be expressed in staff notation. The puppets are each performed by three people, a true rarity in the world. The sensibility of the Japanese can be seen through these puppets and their movements.   Paint a Traditional Tokushima Yusanbako Lunchbox

  Ebuchi Kyoudaiten is a store in Tokushima City that specializes in woodworking, making items such as mirror stands, furniture, and other small items. Craftsmen who have mastered traditional woodworking techniques carefully create each item piece by piece to meet the needs of customers. We are offering a special opportunity for visitors to try their hand at painting a "yusanbako", a traditional craft unique to Tokushima. A yusanbako is a three-tiered wooden lunch box that was used by children for the Hina Festival (Doll Festival) and other special events until around the 1960s.They were made by parents who wished for their children to grow up and have many great memories of their childhood. They can be used for a variety of purposes, such as a lunch box or as a small item container, making it an important item to be passed down from parents to children.   Glare Surf Shop is a surfing shop located in Tokushima City that is close to Komatsu Beach. In addition to selling and repairing surfboards and other surfing-related goods, our shop offers a surfing school. They operate with the goal of making use of as much scrap wood from their furniture making as possible. They combine the arts of wood resin with wood burning to create unique pieces.   【Shikoku Pilgrimage Guided Tours】Temples 1 and 2

  Learn about various historical objects on the temple grounds of the first two temples along the Shikoku pilgrimage route - Temple 1, Ryōzenji and Temple 2, Gokurakuji Places to Visit: ◆Temple 1, Ryōzenji ◆Temple 2, Gokurakuji Temple 1 Ryōzenji: If you are starting your journey here, perhaps you might be interested in buying some of the accouterments – such as sedge hat, wooden staff, pilgrimage book, white pilgrim coat etc. – that people get to show that are making this journey as a henro (Shikoku pilgrim). Enjoy the atmosphere, feel free to take photographs (except for the innermost part of the main hall where the altar is), look at the various buildings and statues, and perhaps take your pilgrimage book to the temple office to have it signed and stamped. Temple 2 Gokurakuji: As you walk along the path, you will most likely be impressed by the large garden on your left and various statues on your right. After you turn left and walk a little bit further, you will see a huge tree in front of you. It is called “the cedar of long life” (chōmei sugi) and is believed to have been planted by the well-known 8th century Buddhist priest Kūkai/Kōbō Daishi, who founded many of the temples along the Shikoku Pilgrimage route. Next, go up a flight of steep stone stairs to see the main hall and Daishi hall, the latter which has a statue of Kūkai/Kōbō Daishi enshrined inside. In front of the Daishi hall are many amulets and wooden tablets related to the safe birth of a child. In fact, the large statue of Kōbō Daishi was given to the temple by a woman during the Meiji period (1868-1912) when she had a safe childbirth after visiting this temple.   【Kamikatsu】Traditional Tea Tasting Comparison with Ms. Shinobu

  ～To Those Considering a Trip to Kamikatsu ～ Kamikatsu is a small town with a population of less than 1,500. In 2003, it became the first municipality in Japan to make a "Zero Waste Declaration", aiming to become a garbage-free town. For responsible travelers who want to experience Kamikatsu as it really is and learn and enjoy through travel, we offer a variety of programs. ～Story～ Kamikatsu Awa Bancha is a lactic acid fermented tea that is rare in the world. This golden tea, with its unique aroma and refreshing sourness, has been handed down from generation to generation in Kamikatsu for private use. The production process is unique, and almost all of the steps, from picking the tea to bagging it, are done by hand. The flavor and taste varies from year to year, and from one tea maker to another, resulting in a thousand different types of tea. This valuable tea-making method has been designated as a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Asset. Faced with a lack of successors, Ms. Shinobu and others involved in the production are working to preserve and popularize the Kamikatsu Awa Bancha tea in an effort to pass this tradition on to future generations.
