【About Ai Take no Uchi Kobo】 The owner, Yoshiko Takeuchi, is in her 80s and still pouring her heart into indigo dyeing. Come and visit, and enjoy indigo dyeing with a warm-hearted grandmother who knows a lot about history! Yoshiko's mother-in-law, Akiko Takeuchi, was born in 1919 and was designated by the prefecture as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage (Art Techniques) on March 3rd, 1982. In her youth, she worked as a roketsu dyer, and in 1973 she studied under Shokichi Watanabe, a dyer in Gifu Prefecture, and learned techniques for indigo dyeing and researched indigo dyeing methods. The indigo dyed by Akiko Takeuchi was truly fitting for the prefecture of indigo - Tokushima. Continuing on the dream of her mother-in-law, Yoshiko Takeuchi reopened the workshop "Ai Take no Uchi Kobo" in 2017. 【About the Aizome Indigo Dyeing Activity】 Guests will dye either a cotton handkerchief, gauze towel, or cotton bandana. The Awa Jurobe Yashiki is the former residence of Jurobe Bando, and is related to the play “Keisei Awa no Naruto”. This play is performed daily at the Awa Jurobe Yashiki, and this type of puppet performance, known in Japanese as “Awa Ningyo Joruri”, is a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. A narrator known as a “tayu” recites the story, adding emotion to each part, and a gidayu shamisen (three-stringed Japanese instrument) supports the tayu with a diverse array of tones that can’t be expressed in staff notation. The puppets are each performed by three people, a true rarity in the world. The sensibility of the Japanese can be seen through these puppets and their movements. Visit Ryozenji Temple (Temple #1) in Pilgrim's Attire!
Why not commemorate your visit to the first temple of the 1,200-kilometer Shikoku pilgrimage by putting some of the attire used by those who make the entire journey. This arduous route is said to have been created by Kukai/Kobo Daishi (774-835), the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, and consists of 88 official sacred sites and numerous other historical and religious places. Monzen-ichibangai is a store that is located in front of the main gate of Ryozenji, No. 1 of the 88 temples where many people start. For this program our experienced staff will first give you a brief lecture about the pilgrimage, then help you put on the attire. Surfing School: Enjoy the Fun of Riding the Waves! (Beginners Welcome!)
Glare Surf Shop is a surfing shop located in Tokushima City that is close to Komatsu Beach. In addition to selling and repairing surfboards and other surfing-related goods, our shop offers a surfing school. We conduct about 500 lessons each year, and the majority of participants are able to take off and enjoy surfing on the first day! Instructor Fukuda, Tokushima's first JPSA (Japan Pro Surfing Association) certified pro longboarder, gives careful lessons that, more than anything, are fun. This school is recommended for those who want to get into surfing or try a new hobby. You don't need to prepare anything, so come and enjoy us for a fun and lighthearted surfing experience! Inside the U-shaped building, you will see approximately 200 wooden statues of rakan (arhats in English), which are disciples of Buddha. At the end of the building, you will see many small wooden statues representing the main deities of the pilgrimage routes around Shikoku, Bando, Chichibu and Saigoku. Special Shikoku Pilgrimage and Indigo Dyeing Tour
This two-day tour contains a myriad of unique experiences, such as visiting a portion of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, staying at a temple and experiencing religious services, learning about Tokushima's indigo industry, and seeing Tokushima's famous Awa Odori dance. ◎On Day 1 you will walk a portion of the Shikoku Pilgrimage by foot. Together with a knowledgeable guide, you will walk from Temple No.1 Ryozenji to Temple No.4. Dainichiji. That evening you will stay at Temple No.6 Anrakuji, where there is a hot spring, and take part in the evening service. Once you've satisfied your stomach, the tour visits the zero waste craft beer brewery. At the eye-catching indigo blue colored brewery, you will be able to learn how Kamikatsu's craft beer is produced while producing zero-waste.
