Visit Ryozenji Temple (Temple #1) in Pilgrim's Attire!
Why not commemorate your visit to the first temple of the 1,200-kilometer Shikoku pilgrimage by putting some of the attire used by those who make the entire journey. This arduous route is said to have been created by Kukai/Kobo Daishi (774-835), the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, and consists of 88 official sacred sites and numerous other historical and religious places. Monzen-ichibangai is a store that is located in front of the main gate of Ryozenji, No. 1 of the 88 temples where many people start. For this program our experienced staff will first give you a brief lecture about the pilgrimage, then help you put on the attire. 【Ai Take no Uchi Kobo】Aizome Indigo Dyeing
【About Ai Take no Uchi Kobo】 The owner, Yoshiko Takeuchi, is in her 80s and still pouring her heart into indigo dyeing. Come and visit, and enjoy indigo dyeing with a warm-hearted grandmother who knows a lot about history! Yoshiko's mother-in-law, Akiko Takeuchi, was born in 1919 and was designated by the prefecture as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage (Art Techniques) on March 3rd, 1982. In her youth, she worked as a roketsu dyer, and in 1973 she studied under Shokichi Watanabe, a dyer in Gifu Prefecture, and learned techniques for indigo dyeing and researched indigo dyeing methods. The indigo dyed by Akiko Takeuchi was truly fitting for the prefecture of indigo - Tokushima. Continuing on the dream of her mother-in-law, Yoshiko Takeuchi reopened the workshop "Ai Take no Uchi Kobo" in 2017. 【About the Aizome Indigo Dyeing Activity】 Guests will dye either a cotton handkerchief, gauze towel, or cotton bandana.
