【Ai Take no Uchi Kobo】Aizome Indigo Dyeing
【About Ai Take no Uchi Kobo】 The owner, Yoshiko Takeuchi, is in her 80s and still pouring her heart into indigo dyeing. Come and visit, and enjoy indigo dyeing with a warm-hearted grandmother who knows a lot about history! Yoshiko's mother-in-law, Akiko Takeuchi, was born in 1919 and was designated by the prefecture as an "Intangible Cultural Heritage (Art Techniques) on March 3rd, 1982. In her youth, she worked as a roketsu dyer, and in 1973 she studied under Shokichi Watanabe, a dyer in Gifu Prefecture, and learned techniques for indigo dyeing and researched indigo dyeing methods. The indigo dyed by Akiko Takeuchi was truly fitting for the prefecture of indigo - Tokushima. Continuing on the dream of her mother-in-law, Yoshiko Takeuchi reopened the workshop "Ai Take no Uchi Kobo" in 2017. 【About the Aizome Indigo Dyeing Activity】 Guests will dye either a cotton handkerchief, gauze towel, or cotton bandana. Visit Ryozenji Temple (Temple #1) in Pilgrim's Attire!
Why not commemorate your visit to the first temple of the 1,200-kilometer Shikoku pilgrimage by putting some of the attire used by those who make the entire journey. This arduous route is said to have been created by Kukai/Kobo Daishi (774-835), the founder of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, and consists of 88 official sacred sites and numerous other historical and religious places. Monzen-ichibangai is a store that is located in front of the main gate of Ryozenji, No. 1 of the 88 temples where many people start. For this program our experienced staff will first give you a brief lecture about the pilgrimage, then help you put on the attire. An instructor will give tips on fishing, with guests being able to enjoy filleting their catch afterwards. A complete set of fishing tools will be provided. Dried Fish Making & Tasting!
Try making dried-fish using delicious fish from Naruto ! For this activity we use mackerel and horse mackerel, which are comparatively easy to handle. These fresh fish are carefully selected from those raised in the whirlpools of the Naruto Strait. This activity is okay even for children who have never touched raw fish before! Our staff will carefully explain how to prepare the fish and be there to support you during the entire process. At Toyota Shoten, we take full advantage of our great location on the Oge Kainan Dori and spare no time or effort in making dried-fish by hand each day, utilizing our special techniques. Plenty of exposure to the sun and salty sea breeze of Naruto erases the fishy smell and aids in the formation of the umami ingredients glutamic acid and amino acid, resulting in a top-quality taste. While waiting for the fish to dry in the sun, enjoy tasting some of Toyota Shoten's prized dried-fish. The taste of dried-fish while gazing out at the Naruto Sea from the terrace and listening to the sounds of waves, is truly amazing. Take your hand-made dried fish home with you as a souvenir. This activity will certainly serve as an irreplaceable travel memory! Our staff will teach you how to make tokoroten, as well as some interesting trivia! While it's boiling, challenge yourself with the Tokoroten Quiz Tournament! It's a great way to have fun with friends and family. ♪ While the tokoroten is cooling, we will make ponzu sauce using citrus fruit juice, so you can enjoy the fragrance and umami of hand-made ponzu sauce. Once the tokoroten has hardened, it's time to use the tokoroten noodle maker. The jelly like feeling is a lot of fun!
