Tebajima Island

This is a small island with a circumference of about 4 km about 15 minutes by small ferry from Mugi Port. This traditional fishing village community has been selected as one of the country's important traditional buildings, and the lighthouse offers a magnificent view. Many subtropical plants grow wild, including the national natural treasure Shiratamamo, as well as Hibiscus and Hamayu. Art exhibitions on the island are very popular. There are no cars on the island, so the islanders love to use handcarts called "cat cars."

Details

Mugi Town, Tebajima Traditional Building Preservation District

In the late Edo period, fishing villages were formed with rows of main houses of fishing households of uniform size and form. The fact that it was a remote island and its traditional landscape remained in good condition was a major reason for its selection as a conservation area.

National Natural Monument: Native Habitat of ”Shiratamamo”

A member of the seaweed family that flourished during the Cretaceous Period 145 million years ago, this organism is also called a living fossil. The Tebajima Great Pond is the only native habitat in Japan that has the conditions for growing shiratamamo, with a ratio of 2 seawater to 1 freshwater.

"Misezukuri”

This is a typical architectural style that can be seen in the Tebajima Traditional Buildings Preservation District of Mugi Town. It is a storm door that opens and closes vertically and, when open, the bottom is a porch and the top is an eave.
