In Tokushima Prefecture’s Mima City, located in an area known as Nishi Awa, lies the beautiful “Udatsu” Townscape, which dates back to the Edo period (1603 – 1868). This small hotel, featuring only 5 rooms, was once a Japanese folk home (kominkan) built in 1881 that was renovated by Moriguchi. The word “udatsu” is used to refer to the plastered, tiled roofs built on the second floors of the townscape’s houses. They were built to prevent the spread of fire to neighboring homes, and were once a sign of wealth. They are grand, dignified, mysterious, and just a touch on the cute side. A small art hotel, PAYSAGE MORIGUCHI aims to create a new form of luxury and local atmosphere by combining landscapes (paysage) and local traditions/people.
