Although not well known, Tokushima Prefecture has the highest number of bars per capita in Japan. It is home to a myriad of authentic bars, with experienced bartenders clad in suits and ties standing behind the counters, waiting to serve you. Visit one of these bars and enjoy a cocktail made with fresh Tokushima fruit, a refreshing highball with a hint of sudachi citrus, or even a vintage whiskey that can't be easily found anywhere else. Of course, you can visit after already eating, but we recommend asking the bartender, who knows the local area well, what their recommendation is - you will be in for a treat!

When you open the door to the bar, you will be greeted with a shelf of bottles that are in the shape of a mountain, with a surprising number of varieties, including Scottish single malt whisky, blended whisky, and Japanese whisky. Mr. Konno, the owner, is an experienced bartender who has won cocktail competitions both in Japan and abroad. Just tell him what you would like and he will prepare the perfect drink for your Tokushima trip, such as a cocktail made with Naruto kintoki sweet potatoes, yuzu, or sudachi. The relaxing and quiet atmosphere will help you forget the hustle and bustle of the city. The owner can also provide you with some invaluable information to make your trip even more exciting.

Enjoy a Drink Filled with the Flavor of the Seasons at BAR ARCHE!

This bar is run by a female bartender and has many female staff members, so women can visit with peace of mind. The owner, Tomomi Murakami, is a winner of the Asia Pacific Cocktail Competition and the Suntory Cocktail Award, and she is sure to mesmerize guests with her movements and gestures. Try a uniquely Tokushima cocktail, many with made with seasonal ingredients, such as a Tokushima highball made with sudachi citrus and Awa wasanbon sugar, or a cocktail made with locally produced yuzu and plums. The restaurant also regularly hosts live jazz performances, so if you have good timing, you’ll be able to enjoy some music alongside your drink. By the way, the name of the bar, ARCHE, means "bridge" in French. BAR ARCHE will provide you with not only a memorable drink, but it may also serve as an unexpected bridge to a night-time encounter in Tokushima.
