Kito Yuzu Citrus

A large amount of the yuzu citrus fruit is grown in the Kito District of Naka Town where cultivation began 50 years ago. This area boasts the largest production volume in Tokushima Prefecture, and is the top producer in terms of both quantity and quality of shipments. Yuzu used to take 18 years to bear fruit, but thanks to the efforts of the local Kito Fruit Tree Research Association, the trees began to bear fruit in three to five years. Most of the yuzu cultivated in Japan today come from seedlings in this area.

    Suitable Climate for Yuzu Cultivation

Naka Town is surrounded by mountains over 1,000 meters high, and over 90% of the land is forested. The cool climate, large temperature differences between day and night, and the abundant summer rainfall makes it an ideal environment for growing yuzu. This climate gives yuzu its bright colors and rich aroma.

    Harvest Period

Kito Yuzu are harvested from the end of October to early December, but since the balance of flavors and acidity changes during the harvesting period, yuzu farmers taste the yuzu to enjoy the changes.

"Geographical Indications (GI)" protect unique regional products as regional brands, and "Kito Yuzu" is the first product in Tokushima Prefecture to be registered as a GI.
